plant-based protein and healthy fats.

Read on to learn more about each ingredient!

Bananas

Merely scratching the surface, researchers are examining the microbiome’s intertwined relationship with the rest of the body. The gut-brain axis is a communication network between the central nervous system and enteric nervous system, a highly skilled mechanism embedded in the GI tract. Comprising the largest portion of the central nervous system, the brain is the control center, regulating interpretations, motor functions, emotions, learning and memory, hunger and satiety, to name a few. As you can imagine, a disruption between the gut-brain axis would lead to a domino effect of negative reactions. By feeding our gut bacteria, we can support the gut-brain connection. Under ripe bananas contain resistant starch, acting similarly to fiber by resisting digestion and feeding the beneficial bacteria. The response is an increase in short-chain fatty acid production, which are reabsorbed and used as energy.

Avocados

Continuing on the fiber theme, the average serving size of an avocado, about one-half, provides roughly 20% of the daily recommendation for dietary fiber. Fiber is an undigestible carbohydrate, expanding as it passes through our intestinal tract and slowing down digestion. Increased fiber intake has been associated with decreased risk for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and weight gain (1). This fruit is also packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, including potassium, magnesium, vitamin A, C, E, K and the B vitamins.

Dates

Though native to the Middle East, date production soars in the United States. In 2012, California produced 90% of the nation’s date crop, specifically the Deglet Noor. One serving of four dates provides ample potassium, B vitamins, iron and surprise .. fiber! Fiber helps regulate blood sugar levels. While blood sugar levels change throughout the day, uncontrolled blood sugar or chronically high levels contribute to an increased risk of chronic disease.

Green Juice

Here’s one ingredient without fiber! Though fiber is removed during juicing, what’s left behind is an abundance of bioavailable vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. For the Simply Green, we add a megadose of these nutrients with Kalalau Green which has kale, cucumber, celery, romaine, spinach, parsley, apple and lemon.

Vanilla Lucuma Protein Powder

To create a well-balanced smoothie, we add Sprout Living’s Vanilla Lucuma protein powder, an organic, plant-based powder with prebiotics and superfoods. Each serving contains 19 grams of naturally bioavailable plant-based protein. Superfoods, such as lucuma and baobab, boost the beta-carotene and vitamin C content to support immune function and increase energy. Sprout Living is committed to sourcing quality ingredients for optimal health goals. By supporting Sprout Living’s mission, we are standing behind our own ethos.

Activated Almond Mylk

To obtain the maximum nutrition, our almonds are soaked and sprouted for a minimum of 12 hours. Soaking releases phytic acid which preferentially binds to minerals decreasing their absorption within the body. Simplicity is key for our recipe: soaked almonds, filtered water, vanilla bean extract, yacon and mesquite as low glycemic sweeteners and a touch of pink salt. Almond mylk production transitioned to the production kitchen when we were unable to keep up with the demand in the retail shops. This transition enabled utilization of the almond pulp within our culinary space serving as the base for our raw cinnamon rolls, biscotti and plant-based bars.

Rich in plant-based protein, healthy fats and fiber, almonds also aid in blood sugar regulation, weight management, cholesterol levels and digestive health. Fiber, again!

Have you tried the Simply Green? Aside from all the health benefits, it's a great smoothie post-workout, for new smoothie drinkers or a satisfying breakfast option.
